Pigmentation & Acne Treatments

The application of chemicals to the skin is a well-described method to restore a more youthful appearance.

Chemical peeling is the chemical removal of layers of skin to improve dermatologic defects.

Ageing skin undergoes several changes. With time, it thins, falls, and creases along muscular and gravitational folds. Compared to simple ageing effects on the skin, sun damage leads to additional and different problems including thickening, solar elastosis, and resultant pigmentary irregularities. Carcinogenic effects lead to actinic keratoses, basal and squamous cell cancers, and less directly to melanomas. Scarring from trauma or acne contributes to an irregular skin surface. True skin laxity in the form of brow ptosis, eyelid bags, jowls and loss of neckline, ear lobule elongation, nasal tip drop, upper lip thinning, and other manifestations currently are treated surgically with facial rejuvenation procedures (e.g., facelift, brow lift, rhinoplasty, lip augmentation). Conversely, these procedures do not help skin textural damage. Fine lines, pigmentary irregularities over a broad area, and ageing skin are treated with peeling using chemical or mechanical means.

Chemical peeling is performed extremely frequently. Considering the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliants currently found in many cosmetic products, peeling essentially is performed with each application of makeup or skincare. Peeling to depth continues to be a popular and excellent means of achieving textural skin improvement. Hundreds of thousands and perhaps more than 1 million phenol peels have been performed in the United States during the last 40 years.

Key to a good skin treatment result is – a commitment from both the provider (doctor) and the client.

Skin peels treatments

Skin peels are vital tools to keep your skin looking healthy, radiant and free of lines and wrinkles. They are useful for treating skin pigmentation problems such as dark circles around the eyes; sun-damaged skin, poor texture and colour. Skin peels are a misnomer because it gives the impression as your skin will be stripped away, whereas this is not the case. The most important role of skin peels is to renew your skin layers and stimulate new skin cell formation to keep your youthful looks maintained.

Skin peels treatment requirements are that the doctor and the client both have to work in conjunction and the skin’s help from within. It is essential to know that clients understand the need for prior preparation of the skin while giving the doctor assurance that they will be compliant with the instructions after the peel. Peel treatment outcomes are equally dependent on the client’s role in the process as much as that of the doctor.

Skin peels can be divided into three categories superficial, medium and deep skin peels. Your doctor will decide on what type of peel is needed for you after the consultation and examination.

Procedure

It is simple and usually takes about half an hour to complete. If done methodically, there are rarely any side effects, and peel protocol is given to the client prior, for about 4 weeks. Some skin peels (not all types) have a downtime of about a week to ten days. Pain is not an issue as you will be given anaesthetic before the procedure.

Skin Peel results

Treatment dramatically improves skin condition, skin hydration, sun damage and discolouration conditions. There will be a reduction of acne scarring, tightening of the skin, including the eyelids skin.

Please note that the skin peels will not improve severe acne scarring, deep wrinkles and moderate lines. For these, you need laser treatments such as carbon-di-oxide laser and pixel laser. The lasers are also known as skin resurfacing lasers.

Range of Skin Peels or Chemical Peels

The application of chemicals to the skin is a well-described method to restore a more youthful appearance. Chemical peeling is the chemical removal of layers of skin to improve dermatologic defects.

In recent years, a large shift has occurred in the manner and depth to which peels are performed. Lasers largely have supplanted deep chemical peeling because of the control of depth they afford, their lesser effect on pigmentation, and their ease of use, with no chemical adverse effects. Superficial peels, in contrast, have increased in popularity. Various agents are used; for simple exfoliation, glycolic or lactic acids are commonly found in almost all moisturizers and many makeup bases.

Chemical peeling agents are extremely varied, particularly among lay peelers. A great deal of medical and lay “magic” and superstition exist regarding peels and peeling agents. For example, a widely held belief for more than 30 years stated that a stronger phenol concentration used in a deep phenol peel resulted in more superficial depth. This mostly has been disproved recently.
