Chemical peels are secrets to the Fountain of youth

Do you wish that you could simply peel away all the telltale signs of aging on the face?

There are treatments known as chemical peels, they improve many telltale signs of aging/ mature skin. Chemical peels not only used to treat ageing skin, also used for treating a number of other skin conditions. Chemical peels are the secrets of the Fountain of youth.

Skin and chemical peels

Skin peels are used to treat some types of acne, age spots, freckles, melasma,  and dis-colouration of skin, post injury pigmentation (PIH), uneven colour and texture of the skin, fine lines and enlarged skin pores. Chemical peels are also used to improve skin texture, blotchy complexion, to smooth out fine lines under the eyes, to minimise fine lines and wrinkles and to achieve brighter and smoother skin. This is an established treatment and peels are used regularly, by the doctors/ dermatologists to treat sun damaged skin, mature and rough skin, to improve skin appearance.

But these treatments are not covered by insurance companies to pay as your medical treatment. These treatments are not considered as medical but cosmetic treatments by the insurers.

Is the chemcial peel treatment right for your skin?

You would like to have the best possible treatment for yourself. Therefore it is imperative that you choose your treatment provider carefully, who has done this treatment and has a plenty of experience in the skin peels and who knows all about the right type of peel for the type of skin, side effects, and what to expect after the treatment.

What you should know about peels before you make a decision to go ahead with a chemical peel treatment?

Skin peel treatments are of different types and are used for variable skin depths. It takes a skilled and specialist in the subject, to carry out the treatment. If the client choice is wrong for the peel it can end up in disaster.  Client selection is very vital for the success of a peel. There are peels just to refresh your skin, they work superficially.  Then majority of chemical peels are performed in the middle skin depth.

What are the prerequisites before you proceed for a skin peel?

Your skin should not be inflamed, broken, tanned or healing.  Your skin should be primed (prepared) before the peel. In certain cases, you need to take a prescription medication before the peel day. Medication before the peel takes care of any potential side effects.

Healing time

Healing time varies and depends on the depth of the peel into the skin layers and the peel strength applied. Medium depth peels can take up to a week or so. But with superficial peels, you can apply make- up straight away. Deep chemical peels are recommended only once and healing period can last up to 3-4 weeks.

What are the side effects of chemical peels?

This is all related to the type of chemical peel, strength of the peel, skin thickness, skin health as a whole, is the client compliant with the aftercare instructions, has the client attended all the follow up appointments recommended by the doctor and how good is general health of a  person.

You should not worry about side effects, if you have prepared your skin well in advance, in preparation for a skin peel.

The temporary side effects of these peels are swelling, redness, eyelids swelling, and occasional open skin areas. Skin can crack and becomes dry after each peel. The skin contains a pigment called melanin, this can cause problems, such as hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation.  The message here is that if skin is unprepared before the peel, then there are more chances of side effects. Production of more pigment in the skin layers after the skin peels (or injury of any nature), is called post inflammatory hype- pigmentation. This is commonly known as PIH.

When to expect as results?

Skin peel results again depend on so many factors. For example your skin type, the stage of the condition being treated, duration, causative factors such as, preparation, of the skin before treatment and compliance with instructions before and after the procedure.  Once the above conditions are met then you should expect good results. Duration to expect results will also be dependent on, the type of peel performed for a given condition. It can take a few weeks to months to achieve desired results. For best results you will need more than one session of a peel.
